End of July garden

This begins an experiment with blogging about the sustainable, green life that my husband, Vic Leipzig, and I try to live here in southern California. Among our green activities are composting and growing as much of our own food as possible. Here is a photo of some of the nectarines we harvested this month.

Growing food at home can be a challenge, especially in this changing climate. Our yard is small because of the relatively large footprint of our house, 3-car garage, driveway and deck. On a lot that is only 60 ft x 100 ft, that doesn't leave a lot of room for growing food. Yet we do it.

We have 19 young fruit trees (most dwarf or semi-dwarf), two composting bins, and three areas in which we grow herbs and vegetables. Our garden wouldn't win any beauty contests, but it provides us with fun and food year-round.

Right now, our home garden is producing blueberries, blackberries, beets, bunching onions, chard, collards, kale, and tomatoes. Cucumbers, eggplants, green beans, onions, and savoy cabbage are coming along nicely, but the summer squash have petered out already.

You can read more about our green life in our weekly column, Natural Perspectives, in the Huntington Beach Independent newspaper available for free online at www.hbindependent.com. Look for us under "Columnists."
